MMR and Autism - the Ongoing Debate As the British Health Department launched a £3 million advertising campaign this month stressing that MMR vaccines are safe, an independent study suggests there is no link between MMR and autism. Researchers at Boston University, U.S.A found that, whilst diagnosed cases of autism rose seven-fold between 1988 and 1999, the vaccination rate remained constant over the period at 95-97%. Researchers argue that this refutes any possible link between the two. They also revealed that 8 out of 10 cases of autism occur in boys, usually between three and four years old. Professor Hershel Jick, leading the study believes the increase in autism could be due to greater awareness and diagnostic techniques today than 12 years ago. The research comes amid fears that falling vaccination rates could lead to a measles epidemic in coming years. Campaigners against MMR believe the triple dose is too much for a child's immune system and are calling for a return to single vaccinations. Fresh concerns were revealed this month that MMR is linked to a rare bleeding disorder in children. idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) causes lethargy, fever and a rash caused by bleeding under the skin.
