Deep Vein Thrombosis in all Travel

At a March conference in Geneva, delegates from the travel industry were told that DVT or "economy class syndrome" is not just related to air travel.

Studies have revealed the syndrome is a danger in all forms of travel where movement is restricted for long periods. Even passengers in business and first class may suffer from DVT and office workers sat at their desks for long periods are also at risk.

DVT is caused by the formation of blood clots, usually in the legs where blood collects during long periods of inactivity. Clots may then break away and move to the brain, heart or lungs causing more serious complications. Known risk factors include smoking, age, obesity, cancer, pregnancy, recent surgery and hormone therapy.
