US Companies Abusing Patents

Scientists in India have accused US companies of patenting remedies which have been used in Indian traditional medicine for centuries.

One patent in particular covers a ginger puree used to reduce gastro-oesophageal problems in children. Indian scientists claim this remedy is already used by Indian families who mix ginger extract with honey and sugar.

Dr V R Seshadri of the Indian Medical Practitioners Co-operative pharmacy and Stores

Hospital believes the Indian government should act to patent these remedies for the benefit of the Indian medical community. "The use of such pungent plants are part and parcel of the Indian medical system".
