Antibacterial Soaps Cause "Superbugs" Experts are warning that antibacterial soaps, particularly liquid soap dispensers, could be spreading disease by leading to the development of "superbugs" such as MRSA. Overusing antibacterial soaps could also cause skin conditions such as dermatitis. The detergents in antibacterial soaps strip away natural fats and oils which normally protect the skin, causing cracks in the skin which may lead to eczema. Overuse of antibacterial soaps may also lead to the development of stronger bacteria, which are resistant to antibacterial products. Dr Eli Perencevich of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston explained "No one has ever been able to prove that using antibacterial soaps meant that anyone was better off than those using standard soap. However, there are studies that suggest use of such products kill off the sensitive bacteria, leaving hardier bacteria, such as staphylococcus aureus, which could be detrimental to health". A recent survey of over 1000 liquid and solid soaps found that over half contained antibacterial agents. Monday, 10 September 2001 |
