Low-Fat Foods - Are They as Good as They Say? Most nutritional experts, including myself, recommend a low-fat diet for promoting a healthy heart and preventing cancer. Unfortunately, people replace foods high in simple sugars with high-fat foods. Food manufacturers often substitute sugar to fat in low-fat products to make them taste good. A university of Maryland (USA) study directed by Dr Linda Bunyard found that women who went on a reduced fat diet by eating low-fat foods did in fact loose weight but however, HDL - the good cholesterol - decreased by as much as 16%. HDL levels are very important for maintaining a healthy heart. People on low fat diets should eat more high-protein foods such as fish and vegetables rather than high sugar foods. So next time you see a food label that says 95% fat free read the ingredients and low and behold you'll see sugar, glucose or glucose syrup as one of the main ingredients. The moral to this story is avoid them! Friday, 24 May 2002 |
