Internet Cause New Health Epidemic

GP's across the country are fighting to contain an epidemic which can be directly attributed to the rising popularity of the Internet.

NHS staff have coined the term Cyberchondria to describe the new condition affecting thousands. GPs workloads are increasing because patients are using the Internet to gather information and diagnose themselves, then demanding information and treatment from their doctors. Whilst giving patients greater access to information about their conditions is useful, the main concerns are mis-diagnosis and being misled by sites which advertise unreliable alternative 'cures' for complicated conditions.

Mike Stone of the Patients Association is also concerned that some patients have their expectations raised by 'drugs and treatments which are only available in the United States".
