Low Calcium Intake, the Pill and Osteoporosis Recent research at Perdue University finds that young women with low levels of calcium intake may be at increased risk of developing osteoporosis if they take oral contraceptives. The study reports "For women who use birth control pills, exercise had a negative impact on [bone density in] the spine and hip, especially in the first six months. Previous research has shown that optimum intake of calcium early in life is crucial to reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis later in life. Oral contraceptives alter the production of hormones, which is believed to affect the body's intake and use of calcium. Of the 50 women studied, only 3 who exercised and took birth control pills did not experience a loss in bone density. Compared to the rest of the group, all 3 had adequate levels of calcium intake. Connie Weaver, leading the study reported "If you're going to be on birth control pills and exercise, you have to get enough calcium". "You either need to get calcium through foods...or you need to supplement". Saturday, 30 June 2001 |
