Coffee and Cola Caffeine Risks Two studies reported last month found that caffeinated drinks such as cola and coffee could be detrimental to health. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported cola drinks could contribute to loss of bone density and conditions such as osteoporosis. Previous research has shown that carbonated drinks may play a role in damaging bone. Researchers at Creighton University, Nebraska claimed that Caffeine worsened this effect. Caffeinated drinks such as cola lowered calcium levels, while other fizzy drinks such as lemonade had a lesser effect. A further study in Norway suggested drinking filtered coffee could increase the risk of heart disease. In a study of 183 Norwegians, giving up coffee was seen to reduce cholesterol levels and boost levels of folic acid, which may be good for the heart. Monday, 10 September 2001 |
