EFA's for Speech Disorders

Essential Fatty Acid compounds could help improve speech and language disorders in children, according to a preliminary study at John Hopkins University, Maryland. 19 children between the ages of two-and-a-half and eight were given a fish oil supplement containing omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acid compounds.

Paediatrician Marilyn Agin of the CHERAB foundation for children with speech disorders claims, "The results were dramatic. They strongly suggest that EFA supplementation combined with speech and occupational therapy could become the treatment of choice in multifaceted communication disorders-including autism and apraxia".

The programme reported results after several weeks, while traditionally speech disorders require several years of intensive therapy.
