Neutralise cholesterol the easy way? The University of North Dakota has recently published a study which suggests that coffee has beneficial effects on our health. Coffee was previously linked to the possibility of lowering the risk of Alzheimer's and dementia and the North Dakota study reveals it's related to the "blood brain" barrier. This is a filter which protects the central nervous system from potentially harmful chemicals carried in the bloodstream, It was revealed in other studies that high levels of cholesterol cause this barrier to become leaky and trigger or contribute toAlzheimer's. In the study, one cup of coffee was given to rabbits for 12 weeks after which the blood brain barrier in those who were given the caffeine was more intact than in those not given the coffee. Does it mean that coffee drinking will now play a valid irole in treating neuroligical disorders? Edith Maskell of Bromley Health Management commented "the Jury is still out on that one. The Study suggests ONE cup of coffee a day is beneficial, there is a danger that the idea could be misinterpreted (as most things are) and I would then be concerned about carers having to cope with dementia and alzheimer's sufferers being hyper as the result of over stimulation from coffee - probably not helpful?".
