Alternative Hope in Fight Against MRSA MRSA ("Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus" is possibly the most virulent form of HAI. The bacterium responsible is fairly common (it lives on the skin of around 30% of the population), but causes serious problems in hospitals where immune systems are weakened and the bug finds it easy to spread and flourish. Due to the widespread exposure of MRSA to antibiotics, there is only one known conventional treatment, the antibiotic "vancomycin". Microbiologists at the university of East London are testing Tea-Tree oil, well known for it's antibacterial qualities as an effective measure against MRSA. The results are positive and particularly reassuring given that vancomycin is known to be toxic. Tea Tree soap is already being used in some hospitals as a handwashing agent for staff and for washing any new patients on a ward. Sunday, 3 December 2000 |
