Chiropractors set for stricter regulation

Chiropractic is one of the disciplines leading the way in statutory regulation of complementary therapies and alternative medicine. The Chiropractors Act 1994 established the GCC (General Chiropractic Council) with regulatory powers to control the industry.

From the 14 June 2001, it will be a criminal offence for a person to describe themselves as a Chiropractor if they are not registered with the GCC and properly qualified and insured.

This is the first of many welcome moves to protect the consumer and to give alternative therapies greater respectability.

Discussions are currently underway to set up a similar council for Reflexology and it is envisaged that this will provide a blueprint for regulating all complementary therapies in the not too distant future.
