CAM Regulatory Body IndependenceComplementary and alternative medicine practitioners at last have an independent Body that regulates them. The GENERAL REGULATORY COUNCIL FOR COMPLEMENTARY THERAPISTS (GRCCT) was launched in October 2007 without any funding from the Government and is already self financing which means that the public aren’t footing the bill. Voluntary Registration Registration is voluntary at the moment but it is anticipated that it won’t be too many years before it will be illegal for any therapist to work unless registered. Thousands of practitioners have already taken responsibility to demonstrate to the public that they are “safe in our hands” by registering with the GRCCT. Protection of the public The purpose of regulation is to protect the public. Therapists need to be accountable. Many therapists think that because they belong to a professional association that equates to being “registered”. Not so. Protection of the therapist The purpose of professional associations is to support and protect their members (the practitioners) so there is no independence. Standards The GRCCT not only checks the qualifications of the therapist, it also insists on annual evidence that the therapist is continuing to develop. Qualifications gained 20 years ago will not reach the national occupational standard that exists today within each profession. Accountability Edith Maskell of Bromley Health Management said “when members of the public decide they want to try complementary and alternative medicine, they would be wise to check the GRCCT register www.grcct.org. Even those members of the public who already receive treatments from a therapist, has nothing to lose by asking “are you registered with the GRCCT? If not, why not?” She went on to say “it’s estimated that there are well over 120 000 therapists practising complementary and alternative medicine in the UK – unless they volunteer themselves to be accountable by registering with the GRCCT – they may find it harder to practice because once the public realise there is a Body of therapists who take their work seriously enough to stand up and be counted, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to work out who the public will choose.” Sunday, 6 April 2008 |
