Research Rejects Benefits of Aromatherapy Researchers at the University of Munich claim that Aromatherapy does not directly affect brain function and any claimed benefits are due to a placebo effect. Volunteers in the study were given facial masks sprinkled with water, peppermint, jasmine and ylang ylang oils and were then monitored for alertness through a series of set tasks. There was no significant difference between those given water and those given essential oils according to researchers. The study is in contrast with several major reports which have supported the beneficial effects of Aromatherapy oils. Meanwhile, Kristen Leigh Bell of Rochester, New York has launched a range of Aromatherapy products for dogs to treat conditions from skin rashes to dog breath and flea control. Bell founded Aromaleigh Products after using an aromatherapy compress to help her own pet recover after surgery to remove a tumour. Researchers at the Scottish Agricultural College are also advocating the use of 'aromatherapy' in pest control as a natural alternative to pesticides. By releasing a natural pheromone produced by greenfly in crop fields, the researchers found an increase in activity of ladybirds, beetles and wasps that feed on crop pests and a corresponding decrease in the level of aphids.
